The further from Aspen Grove they got, the worse she felt. It was as if all the joy was being sucked out of her life with every mile. Myla couldn't see the road through the tears clouding her eyes, and she fought her desire to pull off and turn around.

"Do you want me to drive?"

If she pulled off to switch, she'd never be able to resist returning. "No, I need the distraction."

"Okay." Jemma gripped the bar above her seat and pulled her seatbelt tight in her hand, clutched at her chest.

Slowing, she tried to ease her friend's discomfort. It wasn't Jemma's fault that Myla had made such a huge mistake. They needed to make it off the mountain if they stood a chance of making it back to Kansas. Back to her life. The one that had been so bland. Not fiery, like his kisses.

She wiped the memory from her mind and continued down the mountain.

"Don't you think you're overreacting? He saved your life. I don't think it's such a big deal that you kissed him."

"He was naked."

"So. He's hot. I wish he'd get naked under me."

Myla gripped the steering wheel so hard it surprised her it didn't crack. She didn't want to think of him naked under anybody else. It wasn't like she had a claim to him. They had only kissed.

Fire burned through her body at the memory of their kiss.

"Look, you're upset. Pull over before you crash." She couldn't ignore Jemma's concerns.

"If I pull over, I'm going to go back."

"Let's focus on one thing at a time. Pull over, then we'll discuss what to do."

She slowed her frantic pace and watched for a turnaround or pull off. They had to drive a few miles before they spotted an area wide enough to accommodate turning around. As she pulled in, Jemma pointed out a trailhead sign for Stone Mountain Overlook. They climbed out and Jemma took the keys.

"Do you have any service?" Jemma twisted and turned, holding her phone in the air, trying to pull up the trail map.

Instead of getting back in the car, Myla headed toward the trail. The forest called to her, promising relief. "Looks like it's easy to follow." She started down the path. They could always turn back if it got too steep. She wasn't eager to repeat her earlier fall.

They walked for a few minutes before the area opened up to a meadow with picnic tables. Myla brushed her hand along the grasses at the edge of the trail as she walked over to one of them. She could almost hear the meadow whispering to her, telling her to return.

Jemma followed and sat down on the bench across from her. "I've watched you run from relationships long enough to know you don't get attached. Don't you think you deserve to give this a shot?"

"You don't understand." Jemma would rush her to the hospital for an examination if she mentioned the red dragon. It was crazy.

"You're right. I don't understand why you'd run from a sexy forest ranger, just because you like him.
